I believe that schools around the world would benefit from a cooperative
effort between edubuntu and debian-edu. Both projects have similar goals,
both are short of manpower, and each has different strengths (eg.
debian-edu long ago cracked the problem of centralising services such as
homes and user accounts that is still cropping up on this list). And once
you remove the branding, its the same software the kids get to use anyway,
even the exact same debs sometimes.
Of course I'm just a teacher and not a debian or ubuntu fanatic, but
please ask yourself why you will immediately reject my suggestion without
looking at the possibilities. I'm sure microsoft are very happy to face
fragmented opposition in schools, especially from projects that duplicate
each others' efforts.
