If there was an updated version of the installer which knew of the (until now) 
undetected disc controller, it would. If not it wouldn't. (The installer 
don't need to mount any harddrives to do these operations, as long as the 
kernel supports the cdrom.) 
As long as we deliver Skolelinux / debian-edu with one spesific version of the 
kernel for installation purpouses, it's relatively easy to supply 
kernel-modules for this sort of "update on the fly".  This does of cource 
imply that the new installer allso downloads any new kernel-modules it needs 
to implement the newly discovered recources (be it harddrive or some other 
stuff). AFAIK Linux supports loading of "foreign-compiled" kernel modules as 
long as they are built on the same exact version of kernel source, and this 
was supported from 2.4 upwards?

Same goes for this one ...

Please correct me if I'm wrong, especially since I've not yet made many builds 
of 2.6 yet (my trusty old "polaris", which is the iron I've so far needed to 
build drivers into kernel for production causes, is still ticking on 
2.4-something :)
