  Also, libtool seems to use ~ as some sort of internal separator, and
  thus I've seen packages FTBFS when the top-level directory contains ~
  (which happens when ~ is used as part of the upstream version, not
  when using in the debian revision only).

  While I'm myself eager to see this feature supported in our archive,
  I'm not sure whether having this available before a libtool able to
  cope exists is a good idea.
