Adding Icons to Spider

I have recently created an icon for the spider program and I have
several implimentation questions.

1. Am I permitted to place an icon in /usr/share/pixmaps? What is the
practice with subdirectories under pixmaps? (I did RTFM so if I just
missed it please give me a reference)

2. When you add some programs to the gnome panels their icons are
automaticaly associated with the properties, while with others you have
to go looking for an appropriate icon in /usr/share/pixmaps. (btw is
there yet another repository for images?) how do I impliment an
automatic icon so that when the program gets added to the panel the icon
is there?
