Thanks. I've used kernel-package, but never with vanilla kernels.
I will try it, if tg3.c is removed from Debian kernel-source-2.4.x

The Debian team apparently does quite a lot of work on kernel sources.
For 2.4.26, a diff -r against vanilla kernel gives about 17,000 lines!

root# diff -r linux-2.4.26/ kernel-source-2.4.26/ > 2426-diffs.txt
root# wc -l 2426-diffs.txt
16559 2426-diffs.txt
