I should have been more specific in what I was referring to.  The subthread
I was replying in was more about a 386 distro in general, and trying to
subdue those who would take my message as support for pushing pbuilder-esque
sub-architectures into Debian.  Perhaps a subject change or similar would
have been useful.

For the original problem, it surely should be possible to build 386 and 486+
versions of libstdc++ and include both in the distro, with linker magic (or
installer magic) to tell the difference?
