the choices are:

Dialog, Readline, Gnome, Editor, Noninteractive

but i cheated to get that, with a little 

grep -C debconf/frontend /var/cache/debconf/templates.dat

yeah, well like i said, i agree that debconf should attempt to
fall back on alternative frontends in case of failure (or maybe
just default to Noninteractive or Readline).

debconf-show debconf

gives you a list of debconf settings for the debconf package

echo set debconf/frontend yourfrontendofchoicehere | debconf-communicate

will set the frontend accordingly
