rage128 xserver

[please cc off-list also, as not permanently subscribed]

I'm running Debian 3.0 + testing on a 2-year-old cheapie i386 box from
PC World. Last night I upgraded both Gnome and KDE for the first time
in ages -- and promptly lost my xserver. (xserver-rage128) Damn!

Now all I get is the usual circular dependency taradiddle :
"xserver-common conflicts with xserver-rage128
 xserver-rage128 depends on xserver-common (>= 3.3.5)" -- and friends;

plus a more informative :

"(==) Using config file: "/etc/X11/XF86Config-4"
 (EE) R128(0): [dri] R128DRIScreenInit failed because of a version mismatch.
 [dri] r128.o kernel module version is 2.1.6 but version 2.2 or greater is needed."

Can anyone help me out here?

Is there a more up-to-date version of xserver-rage128 (non-free)
anywhere? Or another xserver that would do the job, without the
conflicts?

Any help appreciated.
