Get rid of /etc/mtab ?

Hello debian-devel

Why not get rid of /etc/mtab?
The same information is available in /proc/mounts. In fact, /proc/mounts is
more accurate e.g. after lazy umounts (umount -l).
And /etc/mtab is not user-modifiable file, which seems to be against policy.

If some software reads /etc/mtab, it may be modified to be a symlink to
/proc/mounts.
