Re: Are we losing users to Gentoo?

This is just a suggestion/idea, and if it's stupid, feel free to flame me.

Why not develop some sort of apt-build based net install that allows the user to download source archives and optimize the packages to the architecture etc. specified in the apt-build config (obviously).
This would give you the option to install a Debian system the traditional precompiled binary way, or a source based Gentoo way.
Clearly this is not something the installer team would/should get to work on right away (they seem to have enough problems as it is), but if people are so concerned with the increasing Gentoo user rate, then those people should consider adding this feature themselves.

IMHO, the whole optimized source based distro concept can be a bit extreme, but if these fickle users are so excited by Gentoo, why not give 'em what they want.

Personally, I think said system would be best developed by a third party team, and maybe in the future, merged into the main installer etc.

This idea has probably been proposed many times before (sorry if I'm being repetitive). All comments/critisizm is welcome
