Anyone who wants to try and reproduce this can do so with the following command: pgi-build --installer-only --with-debian-debootstrap (** NOTE FOR PEOPLE NOT PAYING FULL ATTENTION: PGI ISOs CREATED AS DESCRIBED IN THIS MESSAGE WILL *NOT* WORK! DO NOT FILE BUGS ABOUT THEM! **) Add other options at will. On i386, the resulting ISO will be in the neighboorhood of 90 megabytes. I recommend using the kernel-image-2.4.18-386 package. pgi-build --installer-only --with-debian-debootstrap --kernel-version=2.4.18-386 Burn the resulting ISO to a CD. Boot the CD in an expendable machine, or a machine with an expendable disk partition. strace and several other diagnostic tools are on the "live filesystem", and will be available from the shells on VTs 2 through 6. -- G.
