Which means that no sponsored package will *ever* make it to stable.

If you're going to drop sponsorship, then you need to change NM. Radically.
Really.

Otherwise, what's the incentive? I mean, "wait 6 months and it might get
in". I know that there are people who are long-term NMs (as in, being held
there, and no, I'm not complaining about my situation), or have been
rejected, who are still obscenely capable maintainers.
