Not correct.  You set them when you hit enter to confirm your selections.

If you press escape repeatedly, no matter what mess you got yourself into
or how deep, it should not affect your effective package selections.  Try
it, set dpkg for purge, just press 'X' or escape.  Or confirm the suggested
related selection changes, and hit 'X' in the main list, that looks quite
bad by now.  Enter the selection screen again, it is in the old state still.

Use 'R' to revert to the previous state.  In the main list, this will
also undo the automatic recommends: settings that dselect proposes.
BTW, these auto selections, when they happen, are always put at the top
of the list, so that they are obviously present.  

If you feel a bit more confident about dselect and what it really does, 
you can push it aside with 'Q'.  It won't be in your way when you shoot,
just make sure that you aimed correctly.
