Your scheme is fine in concept, and a distribution independent way of
modularizing configuration scripts is a fine goal.  I'm not quite so
optimistic that such a system would be sufficiently widely adopted to
become useful, since it requires the cooperation of all the relevant
package maintainers.  So, I don't want to build it in as the normal
way of configuring PCMCIA devices.  Do it for Debian if you want, and
when it works great, we can rethink things.  But I still think it is a
distribution centric issue.

I don't think this discussion is going anywhere.  I already provide
the hooks you need to implement your system, so go ahead and do your
thing: I'd certainly like for PCMCIA to have tighter integration in
Debian.  But I'm not going to add another layer of complexity to the
scripts that I distribute, if it is only to set a good example.  I
don't want to have to document it, or maintain it, or answer support
questions about it.
