lilo problem with 2.1.x kernels

Below is a message that I just sent to linux-kernel.

Does anybody know what's going on? I would happily supply more specific
information if I knew what would be of interest.

----- Forwarded message from <vaughan@bob.nhn.ou.edu> -----

When I recently compiled the 2.1.116 and 2.1.117 kernels on my debian
(slink) system, I noticed that make bzlilo doesn't work. On bootup I
get 'LI' only. Interestingly, if I use the debian rescue disk, with
'rescue root=/dev/hda2' to boot with the 2.0.34 kernel, then running
lilo works as it should (subsequent reboots to hard drive are successful).

Whether lilo runs successfully appears to be related to the kernel under
which lilo runs. Very strange to me.

I hope this isn't a FAQ, as I have not long been reading this list.
