Yes, just as another datapoint, GNU Octave does. For the record:

-r--r--r-- 1 edd edd 3625698 Feb 24 17:06 octave-2.0.11.tar.gz
which gives a 21 % saving (as the tarball contains over 3000 files).

Seconded. If space was so important, we would probably not include some of
the truly large packages as xbooks and timidity-patches.
