If they release newer versions of 1.4beta without incrementing some
version digit, you should use 1.4beta.19971114. Otherwise, 1.4beta (or
1.4b) is fine.

You'll have to use epochs then (1:1.4) since dpkg considers (1.4 <
1.4beta).
