Ahh. I think I've got it consistent now. *please* put this information
or example into wherever the dpkg-divert text ends up. 

You might also removing the debugging printf's from the --remove case;
it prints out:

Removing `xterm-color: /usr/X11R6/bin/xterm -> /usr/X11R6/bin/xterm.mono'
>/usr/X11R6/bin/xterm<
><

of which only the first line make sense. Thanks again for helping me
through this; the xterm-color package is finally ready :-)
