    President Of India Advocates OSS

    I am sure this is a first. The President of India has urged [3]
    Indian IT Professionals to develop and specialise in OSS rather
    than Windows. To be noted is that he made the speech[4] (look for
    the "Think Different" section) at the famous Indian Institute of
    Information Technology (India's foremost academic institution
    equivalent to MIT). Also he reminisces that his meeting with
    Mr. Gates were difficult due to differing views concerning OSS and
    Security. What should be noted about him is that he is not a
    politician, but a scientist and an independent thinker foremost.

    India urged to take 'Open source' road

    In an ongoing battle between proprietary and open source software,
    experts of open source software today said India must move towards
    adopting open source as it is affordable.

    Policy makers however claimed that there was scope for both
    systems.

    "While open source would be helpful for countries like India as it
    is free and the total cost of ownership is low, it is an irony
    that it has not taken off in India", S Raghunathan, principal
    secretary, IT, government of Delhi said here at a conference on
    Open source organised by MAIT.
