It's always tempting to say, hey now I come here and choose "THE" web
browser, "THE" desktop manager, "THE" window manager and so on. This
could be nice to produce luser-proof small desktop-edition debian
releases.
But I think that the crap is really useful into debian, since reuse is
the thing that makes GPL work, and so debian, as a free software
distribution, can include them as starting point for new software, or
for people that need only some functionality, or ready to be merged
together. One could say that the crap should remain on sourceforge or
wherever it is, and be packaged only when ready, but then we wouldn't
try it, and wouldn't feel the need to make it better. So if a software
with poor functionality has no security holes, I think it's worth to
stay in the archive.
Popularity will make new users choose the generally-known-as-best
packages, but one looking for a particular feature etc etc etc. (I hope
I've clarified my humble opinion, and I'm sorry for bad english as
usual)
