This would be a suboptimal fix. It seems we really need that
database library for debconf, else it is going to make life
harder for many admins who want to automate package
installation/upgrading and configuration to some degree.

I know some perl and would be willing to help, though I am
neither an experienced programmer nor anything near a database
specialist.

BTW: what's the canonical list for debconf discussion, d-dpkg?
