I haven't looked at d-i code but if coding a graphical installer over
d-i would imply an effort similar to porting the YaST2 Installer to
Debian I would choose to work in the d-i as the d-i team probably
need more help than SuSE people and will be more willing to help. I'm
not saying that SuSE people wont't help, they are very nice and are
willing to collaborate as much as their time allows them (just like
the YaST4Debian team).

On the oder hand if someone chooses to start porting the YaST2 Installer
to Debian he/she would be definitely welcomed :-) 

We are at the first stage of the project. Probably the most difficult
one and new ideas allways dynamise.
