I can see how kfreebsd-downloader can provide a working solution, but I
wouldn't consider it an appropriate bug fix which would satisfy users.
The idea of kfreebsd-downloader is to download a kernel package already
requires a working Internet connection. Thus, it is very complicated to
get a working kernel image and kfreebsd-downloader's postinst logic at
the same time.
However, most modules removed from the pristine kernel tarball are
network card drivers which makes the usage of kfreebsd-downloader pretty
That said, you're the maintainer of the kernel package so you rule. I
personally would let the bug open but demote it to wishlist as the
downloader provides an uniform way to build a non-free kernel. In the
long term we should still target d-i support and installable debs from
non-free just like the Linux folks do. Nonetheless I appreciate your
work as it is already a step forward and improves the situation a lot.
