The hypothesis has been made it could be a problem in mountmedia, where it attempts to mount en extended partition. If you can reproduce this, can you switch to another console (Alt-F2) and try checking if there is a hanged "moun" process ('ps w|grep mount' should tell). If so, can you try the daily built *netboot* images from http://d-i.debian.org/daily-images/ > > 2. Leaving it up to X wizards. This is likely a bug in the X driver or in the kernel. They should know..:-)
