The most obvious problem from the installation report is that the 
vio_type binary is missing. It appears to be included in the 
udev-gtk-udeb, but not udev-udeb - I think this is an oversight.

Unfortunately, I don't know whether re-adding it will be sufficient 
for the CD-ROM (connected over USB on these machines) to be detected, 
or something else is needed.
