Upstream has since moved the default to 1.2. I am hesitant to revert
all of that.

I only see three ways:

1. Ask upstream to provide a compile-time switch to keep the default
   at 0.9.

2. Default to 0.9 in the mdadm.conf file.

3. Expect and require the bootloaders to catch up.

I prefer 3 over 1 over 2.
