Package: installation-reports Boot method: USB Key Image version: http://cdimage.debian.org/debian-cd/5.0.3/i386/iso-cd/debian-503-i386-netinst.iso Date: Jan 18 2010 4:00pm Machine: Eee PC 900A Processor: Atom 1.6 Ghz Memory: 1 gig Partitions: <df -Tl will do; the raw partition table is preferred> Output of lspci -knn (or lspci -nn): not available Base System Installation Checklist: [O] = OK, [E] = Error (please elaborate below), [ ] = didn't try it Initial boot: [ O] Detect network card: [ O] Configure network: [ O] Detect CD: [ ] Load installer modules: [ O] Detect hard drives: [ O] Partition hard drives: [ O] Install base system: [ O] Clock/timezone setup: [ O] User/password setup: [ O] Install tasks: [ O] Install boot loader: [E sdb Overall install: [ E] Comments/Problems: There is no CD drive on the Eee PC, so I had to install from a USB stick. There are only two drives: the USB stick showed up as /dev/sda, and the internal flash drive of the Eee PC showed up as /dev/sdb. I selected sdb to install to, and told grub to install to sdb also. When I reboot without the USB key inserted the system is still configured for sdb, but the internal drive is now called sda! When the computer enters the grub menu, I have to hit 'e' to edit the boot commands, and change hd1 to hd0. The entries in /etc/fstab still say sdb, and there may be places where sdb is still present for all I know. I'm unable to boot, but after a long wait I get thrown to an initramfs prompt. From there I can mount /dev/sda1 without problems.

From there I can mount /dev/sda1 without problems. My ujnderstanding is that all this is related to device renaming issues, which are described in the errata file. Development of the squeeze installer includes some work to avoid those issues under the "persistent naming" release goal umbrella. So, given that such issues are a well known drawback of lenny D-I, I propose closing the bug report. This does not of course mean you weren't right to report. Knowing the installations are correct or not is important for the d-i team. Many thanks for your time testing the Debian Installer and reporting your results. Have fun with your new Debian system!Attachment: signature.asc
