Yes, the syslog shows the several failures.

The grub-installer failed with:
Nov 22 22:06:29 grub-installer: Unrecognized option `-y'
Nov 22 22:06:29 grub-installer: error: Running 'update-grub -y' failed.

Also, finish-install gave:
Nov 22 22:09:09 finish-install: chpasswd: invalid option -- 'm'
Nov 22 22:09:09 finish-install: Usage: chpasswd [options]
Nov 22 22:09:09 finish-install:
Nov 22 22:09:09 finish-install: Options:
Nov 22 22:09:09 finish-install: -h, --help display this
help message and exit
Nov 22 22:09:09 finish-install:
Nov 22 22:09:09 finish-install: warning: /usr/lib/finish-install.d/06user-setup
returned error code 2

I used the "stable" 5.0.3 version of the debian installer
to install the "unstable" distribution. This probably explains
the differences.
