I still cannot reproduce this. Are you sure that you did make a typo 
in "oldstable" at the boot prompt?

Please provide the output from choose-mirror in the syslog!

Well, that's expected as archive.d.o does not have oldstable.
archive.d.o will only work when you set suite to woody or sarge. For etch 
(oldstable) and later you need regular mirrors.
