I did a full installation with a netinst cd image from
20080411 and the reported problems are fixed (CD-ROM drive and
harddisc were detected automatically, rebooting into the newly
installed system worked.

Thanks

BTW: I noticed a curious behaviour (not sure if this is an problem)
in the installation (this was the same in lenny beta1 install,
don't know why I didn't reported it in the intial report):
after installing the base system it came to "Configuring package
manager", then the main menu appears, "Configuring package
manager" was highlighted. Selecting that entry again resulted in
the same. Selecting the next entry "Installing additional
software", also the main menu appears and "Configuring package
manager" was highlighted again - nothing else was done.

Ok, I used a netinst cd, so there are only the base system packages
on it, and no additional software, and the installed machine has no
network card, so there is nothing, that could be done in this step,
but: I installed in default priority, so the main menu should only
appear if an error occurs, right? What is the error here?
Selecting "Installing grub bootmanager" from the main menu worked,
installation went normal from that point.
Relevant part of syslog follows.
