Yes, I can get into the shell. When I exit it, the boot continues and the same
problem happens, i.e. first installer screen loads, but the keyboard is dead.

Meanwhile I  installed etch and upgraded to lenny, which should have the same
kernel as current installer and that one works flawlessly.

This is not the case, only LPT is present.
