Right, I remember now.
It seems most logical to me to implement support for Xen in grub-installer 
after the kernel side has been sorted out so that there's at least a chance 
the code will actually be used.

Right. What that screenshot shows is that the device is recognized (which I 
would indeed expect), but that there is no translation into some human 
readable text, as is done for other devices.

Please have a look at humandev() in partman/partman-base/lib/base.sh.
