The new graphic installer is cool. However, I find the white background 
too bright to be comfortable. 

Compared to the text installer this is certainly a regression :)

Booting with "installgui theme=dark" will give you a "high contrast"
theme which was designed mostly for visually impaired people but can
also be used by non impaired people who prefer dark backgrounds.


I suggest you use that (documented) boot method.
