I suspect that you are us an Etch netboot or floppy image to boot and that
you are trying to install testing. Can you confirm that? If not, exactly
what image are you using and what choices did you make during the
installation?

I'm afraid that we've just discovered that that is not supported, probably
because of incompatibility between the libc in stable and in testing.

If you want to install testing, please either:
- use an Etch businesscard CD image (that _will_ work)
- use a daily build or weekly built D-I image for testing
- install Etch and upgrade afterwards
