Debian-installer is a nice layer over debootstrap
and it does more, such as installing a kernel, partitioning disks.

The programm code comes alive because it is shipped in an initrd.
(kernel boots and starts programms provided in the initial ramdisk)

When d-i would be shipped as tarball,
that way it can be used on an allready installed system.

Use case: Remote conversion of a system as the original submitter did.
