Comments/Problems:

Fails to detect E/IDE hard disk and installation CD-ROM on IDE/PATA
port. The option all-generic-ide doesn't help. Are CONFIG_IDE and
CONFIG_BLK_DEV_IDE not compiled in?

I am able to boot Knoppix 5.0.1 & GRML 0.8 Live-CD's using all-generic-ide. They use 2.6.17 kernels (I don't know what extra patches they use.)

I downloaded linux-image-2.6.17-2-amd64_2.6.17-9_amd64.deb and it's config file shows that the IDE bits are modules. I think I could install off of a CD image installer using all-generic-ide if they were compiled in.

Thanks. Let's close this one then.
Thank you for your patience and diligence on this issue. I have no doubt
many people installing Etch will be helped.

Cheers,
