Setting yaird as default for a subarch is not trivial and IMHO 
initramfs-tools is currently much to be preferred over yaird.

If you can create a file /target/etc/mkinitramfs/conf.d/preproot or 
similar instead, this looks trivial.
base-installer already does similar things starting from line 735.
Creating and testing a patch should be fairly trivial.
