Bug#391733: Segfault after unable to find Release file

Fatal server error:
Caught signal 8.  Server aborting

Just in case someone finds this report through a search on this crash of xserver-xorg-video-nv, which has already been reported as bug 370141 over 4 months ago,
<http://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=370141>
there is an alternative solution to trying the NVIDIA binary only driver (for me it complained about missing "version.h" with kernel 2.6.17.10 sources), which is to install the VESA driver "xserver-xorg-video-vesa" and changing the line under the "General nVidia Card" line in xorg.conf to
Driver     "vesa"

I also found out that when Gnome finally loaded, it didn't let me in the net, before I "Activated" the Ethernet port from the Network settings.
