That is expected as the NIC can only be configured after additional
components have been loaded from the CD.

Seems you have two CD drives. Did you try switching the CD to the other
drive?
What was the exact error? Please also check, after switching to VT2, the
output of 'dmesg' and the contents of /var/log/syslog (using nano as
editor).
