Can you explain why ifup/ifdown is not available in the shell during
install but after reboot? Is the ifupdown package part of the network
install?
BTW: I did try the netinst CD several times both rescue and install,
without any luck with the network.
Another question: Why to go through the same menu in rescue mode as in
install? Normally you want to fix things in a shell, like writing the
MBR, check disks, edit fstab etc. In this case you don't primarily need
the network!

The computer is a Compaq Presario 5670 with a VIA Nehemiah CPU.
Kernels are 2.6.17-1-686 and 2.5.15-1-486 (netinst kernel). I was
recommended to use the irqpoll option for the boot but did not have to
use this switch before. This box has been running Mandrake Cooker for
many years now but when the rpm database was trashed I gave up and
switched to Debian (as for all the other 5 boxes at home).
