Since this is likely to invalidate all debugging efforts up to now, I'm awaiting further instructions on what to do to provide additional information.
I've added to the logfiles website the output (called "ash_dmesg_output" in the top level) of "dmesg" run from the "ash" shell I get dropped into. At least that doesn't contain any potential typos, since I didn't type it.
