That must mean that the installer has problems reading your CD.

Can you do the following.
- do a new install
- proceed to partitioning
- while you are there:
  - switch to VT2 (using alt-F2)
  - use nano to edit the file /var/lib/dpkg/info/base-installer.postinst
    and add a line 'set -x' below the first line
  - switch back to VT2 (using alt-F1)
- continue the installation until the error happens
- send us the /var/log/syslog file (gzipped!)

You can probably use the "Save debug logs" option from the main menu to 
save the syslog file.
