You can find it on the installed system in /var/log/install. I have attached the gzipped syslog. I did look through that file, and it seems that I was slightly wrong in first version of this bug report. module-init-tools was indeed installed (I didn't discover that in the first run, because my first action was to upgrade to unstable, and that caused a (re)installation of module-init-tools). However, problem is and remains, modutils was installed, too. Why? modutils has no business installing at all on an etch system with 2.6 kernel.
