I tried LILO instead, and that worked on the first try. The complete error with grub was (accepting all the defaults): Apr 4 14:44:01 grub-installer: info: Installing grub on '(hd0)' Apr 4 14:44:01 grub-installer: info: grub-install supports --no-floppy Apr 4 14:44:01 grub-installer: info: Running chroot /target /sbin/grub-install --recheck --no-floppy " (hd0)" Apr 4 14:44:09 grub-installer: error: Running 'grub-install --recheck --no-floppy "(hd0)"' failed. I tried specifying the SCSI RAID by device, but that also failed: Apr 4 14:47:28 grub-installer: info: Installing grub on '/dev/cciss/c0d0' Apr 4 14:47:28 grub-installer: info: grub-install supports --no-floppy Apr 4 14:47:28 grub-installer: info: Running chroot /target /sbin/grub-install --recheck --no-floppy " /dev/cciss/c0d0" Apr 4 14:47:36 grub-installer: error: Running 'grub-install --recheck --no-floppy "/dev/cciss/c0d0"' failed. Apr 4 14:47:38 main-menu[504]: WARNING **: Configuring 'grub-installer' failed with error code 1 Apr 4 14:47:38 main-menu[504]: WARNING **: Menu item 'grub-installer' failed. I installed LILO into the boot sector, which worked just fine. I've been increasingly pleased with Debian's installer. I was able to get a system with *very* minimal packages installed in about an hour, on a machine that I had never worked with before. I was worried about the RAID, but it was detected and used automagically (except for the above weirdness). The auto partitioner is one of my favorite new additions, as that was always a step that took some manual computation. Thanks Debian :-) Install logs and other status info is available in /var/log/debian-installer/. Once you have filled out this report, mail it to submit@bugs.debian.org.

Given that your installation was a complete success, I do as usual with reports for successful installations: I close the bug..:-) This does not of course mean you weren't right to report. Knowing the installations are correct is important for the d-i team. Many thanks for your time testing the Debian Installer and reporting your results. Have fun with your new Debian system!Attachment: signature.asc
