Sarge has very minimal SATA support.  What support it does have is
exclusively for harddrives.  There is no support for SATA ATAPI devices
of any kind in sarge.  To get that requires a much newer kernel, and
even then may require extra kernel parameters (I think 2.6.15 kernel
might work if passed libata.enableatapi=1 at the boot prompt).  So
perhaps with that boot option, the latest etch installer beta might
work.

Really the issue is that until the last month or two, the linux kernel
didn't even support SATA cdrom drives.  Sarge was released last summer.
