Hmm. That should never happen with a DVD.

Did you use the DVD for the AMD64 port or the one for i386? Did you 
download the iso image or did you use jigdo or bittorrent?
Can you give us the full URL for the DVD you downloaded? 

Could you switch to the second console (alt-F2) and activate the shell 
there to get the following info?
- the output of 'uname -a'
- the output of 'ls /cdrom/pool/main/l/linux-kernel-di-amd64-2.6'
  or 'ls /cdrom/pool/main/l/linux-kernel-di-amd64-2.6'

Does 'dmesg' show any errors reading the DVD?

Any strange messages in the syslog? Use 'nano /var/log/syslog' to view it.
