Ok following:

http://www.debian.org/releases/sarge/i386/ch05s01.html.en#boot-initrd

I created a /boot/newinstall and setup grub. I also put the netinst .iso
in /boot/newinstall too, hoping the Debian install we find it.

I booted from the external USB enclosure into the Debian installer
alright, though it doesn't find the .iso. In fact once it boots up it
doesn't seem to see the USB hd that it booted up from!

That's silly, unless I'm mistaken. USB drives are super duper common. It
should be supported from the stock kernel.

One might suggest booting Windows and copying in the netinst .iso onto
C: That's what I did, except...

Sadly Windows setup the machine as NTFS. Even though I initially booted
the d-i and deleted convert.exe !
http://www.chronox.de/x40_linux/linux_on_x40.html#prevent_windows_xp_partition_to_convert_to_ntfs

Since the damn machine is Korean. I have not figured out how to use the
rescue partition and re-install Windows at this suggestion:

"Note: I got a number of complaints that this does not work. At first,
it also did not work for me. I reinstalled Windows from the rescue
partition and immediately afterwards I renamed the convert.exe. This
helped to block the conversion."

So if the d-i installer doesn't support external USB hds, now what? I
guess I should try tftp netboot. Argh!
