Bug#352459: installation report

Package: installation-reports

INSTALL REPORT

Debian-installer-version: debian sarge 2.6.8 "business
card" from debian.org website
uname -a: <The result of running uname -a on a shell
prompt>
Linux debian 2.6.8-powerpc #1 Thu Nov 24 00:17:15 UTC
2005 ppc GNU/Linux

Date: <Date and time of the install>
Febuary 2005 (it took me a few weeks in my spare time
- in segments, false starts,etc)

Method: How did you install?
i used busnes card to do network install
at 2[lib, cafe] local public wifi sites
        What did you boot off?
i booted off vmlinix and initrd copied off
b.card (burned to cd) (see note 3)
these i place in Linux Kernels folder,
booted off BootX w/in MacOS8.1
FOUND NECESSARY to d/load by hand w/
another laptop woody install vmlinux/initrd
WHICH ALLOWED ME TO break into shell
where i could mount new sarge and copy
		vmlinux/initrd 2.6.8 to MacOS partition !! (got it -
post install - no quik )
If network install, from where? Proxied?
one site i tried had portal block me. also
sometimes issues with switching ESSID.
the installer did provide auto configure domain
name from the router which
was acceptable to start, as was
hostname debian.

hmmm - had to parted from the sarge bus card half
way through packages
started with 400 MB, gave up my OS9 for another
500MB

		    - also tried a scsi external drive - could not
get it to boot, with
various methods of copying from IDE install.

		    -partition 9 is MacOS8.1, 11 is data

Comments/Problems:
I skipped Quik since installer told me i could lose
able to boot macos. as noted no
way i could see provided to copy kernel/rd for
bootx users, other than hack.

the installer guide being 3/4 about woody i had
already downloaded that installer,
and used that to partition/format. later i found
although mounting is odd there
in the sarge installer, it does give you parted which
i used to enlarge - root.

oh i had tried to get a minimum install cd but
apparently some noise on my network
corrupted the image - so after two downloads and
wasted cds i went w/ business card.
seemed to deal better with whatever.

<Description of the install, in prose, and any
thoughts, comments
and ideas you had during the initial install.>

HAVING TROUBLE with aptitude. it just trashed my disk
in its own data base today,
trying to get some X/desktop services going. this was
a run-away of debian-config.

i think default package set could
include some laptop tools more - sleep and battery
help.

i do not think i would have got this far without
previous linux/ unix experience.
however it had been a while with some gaps and there
were surprises for me.
i had a R.Hat5 MKLinux 1998 it gave me everything
include KDE in 400MB and it
all installed at once (that was default). same
machine. well then i learned
all my unix utils in 1986-94.

i would like to see more what installer is doing and
more options debug working.
it feels a trifle overautomatic to me. it is good to
have options and defaults.
i would say the thoughts i had during initial install
between bored and mystified.

the documentation is really hard to get into as it is
huge, without an obvious
browser of some kind perhaps. LUCKY me i am
sophisticated enough to deal w/ man pages.

i am excited and enthused by the success of linux and
support of "freedom" it
contains. I am glad Debian continues to support old
powerbooks, especially
after for instance some worked hard to fix video
driver here finally recently.

However some booting errors - non fatal, but ...

i was kinda thrilled by the network install. but
disappointed now with aptitude
choking, and having trouble slogging through
documents here w/out a browser.

hmm maybe could i put MK'98 back on my scsi disk and
booting there peruse the docs ??

SUGGESTION - throw a "Welcome" readme or 2 or 3 at us.
more orientation.
