I've tried installing d-i 20050603 on a Dell Inspiron 9300:
* 'expert26' didn't find the hardisk: d-i correctly loaded ata_piix (for
8086:0x2653) but no devices showed up. (The DVD drive worked.
Modifying the module load order didn't change anything.)
* 'expert' made the disk available as hda but disk access was extremly slow
and I've aborted the installation after it took more than 10 minutes to
reach 30% when formatting the /home partition.
Ubuntu's installer had no problems with the machine, the disk correctly
showed up as sda.

Based on the bug log, this was due to the 2.6.8 kernel; d-i uses a newer
