Bug#346589: partman-auto: creates too large swap partitions

that's pretty much wrong, it does support it.
egrep SUSP /boot/config-2.6.15-1-686 
 CONFIG_SOFTWARE_SUSPEND=y

also if you use initramfs-tools it will automatically parse your
boot up resume setting and do the right thing.
it may be wishlist to have the d-i grub-installer or lilo-installer
add the resume arg for the created swap to the boot args??

well usual bloated desktop stuff, that the user wish:
oowriter + inkscape + scribus + firefox + ..

but i agree double the size of ram may be to much for 1g ram boxes,
the size of ram would be enough.
